More than half
a century ago, Gary Vermeer unearthed opportunity while working on his farm
in Pella, Iowa. Gary created a mechanical hoist to ease the process of unloading
a wagon. What was once a laborious task was made faster with less effort.
It was 1943 and, due to World War II, it was difficult to hire enough agricultural
workers to operate a farm. So, when word spread in the small community of
his progressive invention, Gary quickly started receiving orders for his
unique wagon hoist, which led to the beginnings of Vermeer Corporation. Gary, along with his cousin Ralph Vermeer, a local banker, opened
the doors on November 22, 1948, and was incorporated by the state of Iowa
on January 3, 1949. As the company grew, so did its product line.
